The mission of the Volunteer Program at Medical Rescue Team South Authority (MRTSA) is to provide a means for personal and professional development of highly motivated individuals with the desire to serve the community through Emergency Medical Services. The Volunteer’s primary goals are to become and remain proficient in Emergency Medical skills, to provide the best possible care and training to the community, and to become an integral part of the overall mission of MRTSA.

MRTSA Volunteers are strongly determined individuals from every walk of life, who are currently in the process of obtaining EMT certification as well as experienced EMTs and Paramedics. The majority of our Volunteer members employ our program as a “gateway” in securing a Part-Time or Full-Time position within the MRTSA organization. Although the intention of our program is to provide MRTSA with a well trained hiring base of future employees, our program welcomes the opportunity for individuals to remain a “true” volunteer. These individuals come from a variety of backgrounds including business professionals interested in breaking out of the office scene, retired individuals desiring a rewarding initiative to stay active in their community, Moms and Dads looking to reenter the work environment after raising their family and allied health professionals who bring their individual expertise and professionalism to our ambulances.
Every “new” volunteer is assigned a Mentor from among the career staff at MRTSA. The role of the mentor is to guide the volunteer through the hands-on approach of becoming a competent, skilled and professional EMT at MRTSA. Our mentors have significant experience as an EMT or Paramedic, as well as the necessary patience and teaching skills required to afford the volunteer the most beneficial and productive EMS learning environment in becoming an integral part of our professional staff.
During the past 30 years of Emergency Medical Service provided by MRTSA to its communities, over 200 of our former volunteers have moved on to become health professionals in their own right. Of those over 50 former volunteers have become Medical Doctors. Other past volunteers have continued their careers to become physician assistants, nurses, medical researchers, physical therapists, EMS educators, as well as MRTSA career EMTs and Paramedics. MRTSA volunteers gain the hands on patient care experience, the perspective and confidence that are required to pursue a career in medicine.
MRTSA recognizes that the profession of prehospital emergency medicine is not the “right fit” for everyone. The MRTSA Volunteer Program affords interested individuals the opportunity to “ride along” with one of our experienced crews prior to committing their valuable time to our program. During a ride along, the potential volunteer acts strictly as an observer in reviewing the daily tasks performed by our crews while obtaining a clearer understanding as to what the profession of EMS is really about.
