Our Capabilities

Pediatrics

Medical Rescue Team South Authority operates in a service area with an abundance of young families, special education centers, and schools. Our geography combined with our pursuit of excellence has driven us to become a center of the highest pediatric standards. MRTSA participates in the Emergency Medical Services for Children (EMSC) a federal program that is administered by the states. PA EMSC voluntary recognition program run by Pennsylvania Emergency Health Services Council (PEHSC) recognizes MRTSA as an expert level agency, the highest credential.

Medical Rescue Team South Authority has a dedicated Pediatric Emergency Care Coordinator (PECC), who receives specialty state training and who is tasked with building education for our BLS and ALS providers, maintaining pediatric skills, spearheading projects that improve our pediatric capabilities. MRTSA has 100% review of all pediatric cases to ensure we are giving the best care.

PA PECCMedical Rescue Team South Authority works with UPMC Children’s Hospital, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, and other entities to bring meaningful pilot projects and education to our program.

MRTSA runs multiple pediatric programs every year including frequent car seat checks, and an annual public safety camp in conjunction with Mt. Lebanon Police and Fire Department.

Special Operations

Bike Team

The MRTSA EMS Bike Team was formed in 2008 to provide optimal coverage for many events to which Medical Rescue Team South Authority deploys. Events such as Fourth of July celebrations, football games, Martha's Run, the Mt. Lebanon Ultra Party, First Fridays, and the Pittsburgh Marathon are attended by large crowds, making response to a patient and accessibility by emergency vehicles challenging.

The paramedics and EMT's of the Bike Team can respond quickly, with bicycles specially made and equipped for EMS duty. Specially made bags are attached to the bike and carry basic and advanced life support supplies.

All team members have distinctive high visibility uniforms.

Large Event Coverage

Medical Rescue Team South Authority will also assist the City of Pittsburgh EMS to staff large events such as Steelers games, concerts, and large pop-up events.

Special Response Teams

Medical Rescue Team South Authority is a medical contributor to the South Hills Area Council of Governments (SHACOG) response capabilities and the greater Allegheny County region.

SHACOG CIRT: The Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) is tasked with handling critical field operations where special tactical deployment methods or intense negations are beyond the capacity of field officers. Our medics serve to provide advanced tactical medicine. In addition to training with CIRT, these providers receive specialty training through national and federal training systems specific to combat casualty care. These providers are typically certified to be TP-C or equivalent.

SHACOG CIRTSHACOG TRT: The Technical Rescue Team (TRT) is made up of personnel from the 41 fire departments and 12 EMS agencies in the South Hills of Pittsburgh which covers 225 square miles and has a population of over 330,500. The team covers multiple disciplines including confined space rescue, trench rescue, rope rescue, structural collapse rescue, tower rescue, industrial machinery extrication, swift water rescue, and flood water evacuation.

AC HMMR Team: The Allegheny County HAZMAT Medical Response (AC HMMR) Team responds to various HAZMAT situations in and around Allegheny County. The HMMR team is developed specifically to focus on the medical needs and the precise and specialized treatment that HAZMAT patients require.
